MFA Changes: Texting and Phone options are no longer usable February 1, 2027

Summary

MFA changes are coming where texting and phone calls are no longer available for Microsoft 365 and other StarID-linked account access.

Body

Multifactor Authentication Changes Begin October 1, 2026

TL;DR: Most people do not need to do anything right now. If you use a text message or phone call to verify your identity when signing in, you will need a different sign-in option by February 1, 2027. IT will contact the people who need to make this change and will provide step-by-step videos, written instructions, and Knowledge Base articles. StarID password rules are also changing, but you can keep your current password until you are prompted to change it.

MFA Changes coming where texting and voice calls are unavailable for use

Minnesota State is making two security changes beginning October 1, 2026 – MFA Sign In Changes and StarID Password Changes. The StarID password changes can be found <KB link>. Most people do not need to take action right away. Please review the information below so you know what to expect.

Text messages and phone calls will no longer be sign-in options

Some people currently receive a text message or phone call to confirm their identity when signing in. These options will stop working on February 1, 2027. Anyone who uses them will need to choose a different sign-in option before that date.

Starting October 1, 2026, you may see a message asking you to update how you confirm your identity when signing in. At first, you can choose “Skip for now.” IT will identify and contact the people who need to make this change.

Starting January 19, 2027, you will have fewer opportunities to select “Skip for now.” If IT contacts you, please complete the update by February 1, 2027 so you can continue signing in without interruption.

The most common replacement is the Microsoft Authenticator app, which lets you approve a sign-in or use a code. Other options are available. If you cannot or do not want to use a personal mobile device, contact SPC-IT.ServiceDesk@saintpaul.edu to discuss an alternative, such as a small physical device used to confirm your identity.

Keep the device you use to approve sign-ins with you when you may need access to Microsoft 365, D2L Brightspace, Zoom, or other online services.
