StarID Password Changes: What You Need to Know

Image of StarID Password Changes

Bottom line: You do not need to change your password now. Your current StarID password will keep working. The new rules apply only the next time you change or reset it, and no outage is expected.

When will this affect me?

  • On or shortly after September 15, 2026: The updated StarID password rules are expected to take effect. Final implementation details and any timeline updates will be shared by the System Office.
  • When you next change or reset your password: You will create a password that meets the new standard. Depending on the service, you may then be asked to sign in again on a device or app.
  • During the following 180 days: Minnesota State will work with campuses on related password-policy updates. This work is mainly behind the scenes.
  • By the end of the transition period, anticipated around March 2027: Routine password expiration is expected to be removed for StarID accounts that meet the new standard. More guidance will be provided before later changes are made.

What will my new password need?

  • At least 15 characters
  • Characters from at least three of these groups: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
  • Cannot include your StarID
  • Cannot match a password you used before

What uses my StarID password?

The change applies to services that use your StarID, including D2L/Brightspace, eServices, Microsoft 365, TeamDynamix, Workday, Zoom, and some campus services such as device sign-in, or printing. Accounts that do not use StarID are not part of this change.

What do I need to do?

  • Nothing right now. Keep using your current password.
  • When you are prompted to change or reset it, follow the password guidance shown in the StarID Self Service portal.
  • If you have trouble after changing your password, sign in again where prompted. Campus IT teams can submit unresolved issues through the Minnesota State Service Portal.
